Stormwater management

Efficient and controlled stormwater management

Managing stormwater has become a real challenge for many municipalities. As a direct consequence of urban development, ground that is increasingly impermeable reduces the natural infiltration of stormwater during rainy periods. The stormwater runs off and joins the waste transported by the drainage networks, thereby saturating the treatment plants.
Municipalities are therefore seeking efficient solutions to manage stormwater, complying with the requirements of the European water framework (WFD) directive on the good ecological state of natural environments.

To solve this problem, Lyonnaise des Eaux and CIRSEE, in partnership with local players, have developed an innovative, real-time, predictive facilities control system. The system accurately controls flow, affording the dynamic management of the drainage networks and better control of local flood and pollution risks during periods of heavy rain.

Based on a high performance computer modelling system, the control system incorporates French weather forecasts and information on flow circulation in the networks. Data is continually exchanged between the control room and the facilities.

This system is currently being tested in numerous municipalities, providing optimal facilities management and investment control.
